Raja Yoga is regarded as the king of all yoga and forms part of the six branches of the yoga system. The rest of the categories are the Karma Yoga, the yoga of action; the Jnana Yoga or the yoga of knowledge; Bhakti Yoga or the yoga of faith in love of the Divine; the Hatha Yoga or yoga of exercise; and the Tantra Yoga or the yoga of ceremony.

On the other hand, Raja Yoga is called the yoga of meditation and is recommended for those who would like to achieve spiritual and mental enlightenment. The meditation strategy involves the stilling of the mind so that it forgets the real world and the rest of its problems so that the mind gets opened and prepared to accept divine or cosmic energy.

An aspirant sits in a cross-legged position while repeating the mantra or the words which are filled with spiritual power. The mantra can be a single word or a series of words. Through the deep concentration and repetition of the words, the thoughts filling the mind become lesser until such time that a feeling of peace clouds over.

It is one way of detaching one’s self from the physical world full of troubles while communing with the Creator. The very purpose of Raja Yoga is to reach the Niruddha state wherein life can be as pleasant as possible.

The yogis or students of yoga are enticed to let go of the dilemmas that confront them because there is a heavenly state that will comfort them. It is achieved through the meditations of the Raja Yoga.
