Jivamukti Yoga
The meaning of Jivamukti is: liberation while living.
Jivamukti Yoga is the brain child of David Life and Sharon Gannon. They came up with it 1984 by incorporating their Ashtanga Yoga with that of Shri K. Pattabhi Jois to include various spiritual teachings.
At one point they started teaching their friends and in 1989 they expanded to open the first Jivamukti Yoga Center.
The goal of Jivamukti Yoga is to use it teachings, techniques and philosophies in all aspects of everyday life. Irregardless of the Yoga you practice, this will help to deepen your understanding of it…of yourself and guide you along your spiritual path of clarity and also self discovery.
You’ll find that it is taught in the style of Vinyasa including meditation, Sanskrit mantra chanting, teaching from text and physical lessons of asana. Often one will find Jivamukti Yoga to be physically rigorous with spiritual realms being stretched past their limits on the mind.
Most Jivamukti Yoga classes include nada yoga, ahimsa, bhakti, scripture and meditation as well. Important Sanskrit scriptures that are focused on include: Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, Study of the Sanskrit Alphabet and grammar.
Some other things that Jivamukti Yoga focuses on are Ahima: animal rights, vegetarianism, the environment and taking action of political and social concerns.
